How does the roof covering affect the underlayment conversation?
There is no single underlayment answer for every roof. Start with the covering, slope and proposed assembly, then ask how the specified product fits that installation. Tile, shingle, metal and membrane systems should not be treated as interchangeable.
What you can take away: Leave with questions matched to your roof covering and the documents needed to compare a proposal.
Identify the covering
Use a safe photograph if you are unsure. Include mixed or low-slope sections.
Request a complete specification
Ask for product names, applicable approvals and installation instructions.
Plan for the building’s use
Discuss occupants, tenants, equipment and access before setting a schedule.
Is a more expensive product always the best choice?
No. Suitability depends on the specified system and applicable requirements. Ask why the proposed product fits your roof.
Do commercial roofs use the same plan?
Not automatically. Covering, slope, drainage, equipment and operating needs affect the assessment. The number of stories alone does not decide the building’s use.

Underlayment is part of a roof system
The layer beneath a roof covering must be selected for the actual system. A product that fits one installation is not automatically suitable for tile, shingles, metal and low-slope roofs alike.
“New underlayment included” leaves important questions unanswered. A useful proposal names the product and explains the work needed to install it as part of the roof system.
A useful request describes the problem and the building’s practical needs. You do not need to diagnose underlayment failure or choose a product before asking for an assessment.
