PRACTICAL ROOFING GUIDE
Underlayment is part of a roof system
The layer beneath a roof covering must be selected for the actual system. A product that fits one installation is not automatically suitable for tile, shingles, metal and low-slope roofs alike.
Start with the covering and slope
Identify the roof covering if you can do so safely: tile, shingle, metal or another material. Note any low-slope sections, additions or mixed materials. Different sections of the same building can need different systems. A photograph can help a contractor identify what needs closer inspection.
Tile, shingles and metal raise different questions
For tile, ask about access beneath the tiles and whether reuse is part of the work. For shingles, ask what covering removal and deck preparation are included. For metal, ask how the proposed underlayment fits the specific panel system and its installation requirements, including temperature suitability where relevant. Avoid choosing solely by a generic label such as “synthetic.”
Low-slope coverings need their own scope
A membrane roof should not be treated as a tile roof with different surface material. Ask the contractor to identify the complete proposed assembly and drainage approach. Commercial owners should identify rooftop equipment, access routes and operational restrictions early.
The useful document is the specification
Ask for the manufacturer, product name, applicable approval and installation instructions for the proposed system. The contractor and permitting authority must determine suitability for the actual building. A product listing is a starting point, not blanket approval for every use.
Your takeaway: Identify the system first. Compare products only after the proposed installation and its requirements are clear.
